About The SaskPower Northern Reading Program
Our Story Begins...
Back in 1991, a group of passionate people gathered to brainstorm how to improve literacy rates in Northern Saskatchewan. That’s how the Northern Reading Program (NRP) was born! Since then, every January and February, we’ve been bringing fun and reading to our communities. Our mission? To make reading a beloved pastime, boost literacy, and unite our communities through the joy of books.
A New Chapter in 2024: Going Online!
In 2024, the NRP became available online for the first time. Now, no matter where you are in Northern Saskatchewan, you can join in the fun, connect with others, and enjoy the magic of reading right from your home or school. It’s a big step toward bringing our communities closer together and making reading more accessible to everyone.

The NRP isn’t just about reading; it’s about creating a world of fun, discovery, and community. Whether you’re young or old, a book lover or just starting out, we’re here to show how reading can be the best kind of adventure. Each year, we pick a new theme to keep things exciting – from “Libraries: Hot Reads for Cold Nights” to “Reading: Path to Learning”.
Who's Part of This Adventure?
Our program is a big tapestry of Northern Saskatchewan residents, schools, libraries, teachers, homeschoolers, families, and many others who love books as much as we do. They are the stars who organize activities, stir up excitement, and bring our themes to life in their communities.
Our Evolution
What started as a simple idea has grown into a major annual event. We deliver thousands books – some donated by kind book sellers and publishers, others bought with sponsorship funds – to communities across our region. We’ve even hosted author tours, bringing the magic of stories right into your backyard!
What We Do
As part of the Northern Reading Program, communities are connected online, bringing readers together across the North. Throughout the NRP, each community works toward becoming the “Readingest Community in Northern Saskatchewan,” while also sharing in a collective reading experience. It’s a friendly competition and a shared journey that continues to spark a love of reading across distance and throughout the winter season.
